Starting Small, Growing Strong: Legal Essentials for Nonprofit Success

Thursday, November 16, 2023 | 1:00 – 2:30 pm

Community Foundation C3 Center, 1910 Ingersoll Ave, Des Moines

This session is intended for board members and staff of emerging, volunteer-led, or newly incorporated nonprofit organizations seeking additional information around legal questions.

Session Facilitator: Nick Roby, Clinical Professor of Law / Director, Entrepreneurial and Transactional Clinic at the Drake Legal Clinic

Congratulations you’ve joined the board or staff of an emerging and growing nonprofit organization doing great work in the community! Now, how do you grow the organization and your mission while making sure you are legally compliant and maintaining your 501(c)(3) status?

Nick Roby and student attorneys from the Drake Legal Clinic will provide insight to help you navigate individual responsibilities as well as those of the organization.

You will walk away with:

·         Understanding of your individual legal responsibilities

·         Knowledge of the organization’s filing obligations

·         Information about the importance of following and updating your bylaws

·         Insight on Directors and Officers Insurance – what is it and how much do you need?

·         Guidance in onboarding and managing your first staff members

Bring your legal questions and concerns and join us for an informative afternoon diving into common questions nonprofits often ask.

This session is offered at no charge. Questions? Contact Barb Hobson at 515-447-4206 or hobson@desmoinesfoundation.org.
