Cleojean & Dick Olson
Football has always been part of Dick Olson's life, from playing in high school and at Drake University to enjoying the game from the stands. Although Dick's passion is football, one of the first gifts Dick and Cleojean gave through their Donor Advised Fund at the Community Foundation was to Dick's high school band. Dick remembers the support the band provided for the football team, and many times the band was still marching when football practice ended.
"Much of our giving is inspired by what evokes emotion," Cleojean said. "Football and the band did that for Dick. For me, supporting organizations that serve the mentally ill is very important."
The flexibility of their Donor Advised Fund allows the Olsons to support a variety of causes close to their hearts and receive expert philanthropic guidance from the Community Foundation's giving experts.
"I like the idea of utilizing the Community Foundation to facilitate our giving because they can help us put the money where it will do the most good," Cleojean said. "The Community Foundation is informed about local issues and acts as a resource for us as we choose the specific charities we'd like to support."
