Home Preservation for Heroes – November 5 – 7, 2025

Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity’s first-ever Home Preservation for Heroes initiative will amplify the critical need for preserving affordable housing for Central Iowa’s heroes. From firefighters, first responders, and healthcare workers, to active military personnel and veterans – these are the community servants, the local heroes who deserve a safe, decent, and affordable place to call home.

According to the Housing Assistance Council, more than 22,000 Iowa veterans live in homes with one or more major quality problems. Yet many low-income veterans lack the resources to make necessary repairs—1 in 5 Iowa veterans are cost-burdened by their housing expenses.

November 5 – 7, 2025, GDM Habitat for Humanity will partner with local heroes—including veterans—to complete home preservation projects that will make their homes safer, stronger, and more livable. Projects may include exterior repairs, critical home repair, weatherization, or accessibility improvements.
