Walnut Crossing

Goal: $500,000
Funding Deadline: December 31, 2026
Giving Type: General Support

Project Description

Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity is launching its largest-ever development — Walnut Crossing in Waukee.

This 48-townhome neighborhood is a bold step toward addressing Central Iowa’s housing supply shortage, made possible through a public-private partnership with the City of Waukee, generous financial and volunteer support from the community, and future Habitat homeowners.

Walnut Crossing will provide affordable homeownership opportunities for hardworking individuals and families earning 30–80% of the Area Median Income—such as teachers, retail workers, and healthcare staff— who are being priced out of Waukee’s booming housing market. With home prices soaring past $375,000, this development offers crucial support to those who make the city thrive but struggle to live in it.

Currently, there here are about 300 properties on the market in the entire Waukee School District, including portions of our neighboring communities. Of them, only four are below $300,000... If people want to be able to send their kids to the Waukee School District, they shouldn’t have to be rich to do it. - Courtney Clarke, Mayor of Waukee

Construction of the Walnut Crossing development is already underway, with infrastructure work beginning in spring 2025 and the first walls set to go up in late 2025. To fully fund construction, GDM habitat seeks to fill a $500,000 fundraising gap. Your gift today makes a big difference. Questions? Contact Clara Bergan at cbergan@gdmhabitat.org.
