Reinvesting in Community: Revitalizing the Walnut Creek Family YMCA

For more than 45 years, the Walnut Creek Family YMCA has been a cornerstone of the west side community—a place where children learn, families connect, and individuals of all ages pursue healthier lives. Since opening its doors in 1980, the Walnut Creek YMCA has evolved alongside our growing community, serving thousands of residents through youth programs, wellness opportunities, swim lessons, sports, and family support services.

Today, the Walnut Creek YMCA welcomes more than 8,300 members and sees over 23,000 visits each month. Each year, more than 1,700 youth participate in enrichment programs, 1,200 children build confidence and teamwork through youth sports, and hundreds learn life-saving water safety skills. The YMCA’s Kids Zone alone hosts more than 14,000 visits annually, providing a safe, supportive space where children can learn, play, and thrive.

After decades of serving our community, key areas of the facility now require significant renovation and modernization. Aging infrastructure, accessibility limitations, and heavily used youth spaces no longer meet the needs of the growing and increasingly diverse families we serve.

To ensure the Walnut Creek YMCA remains a vibrant community resource for generations to come, the YMCA is launching a $3 million revitalization project focused on improving safety, accessibility, and youth-centered spaces throughout the facility. Planned improvements include modernized building systems, enhanced accessibility, upgraded family spaces, and the transformation of key youth areas.

Community support will help fund:

• An expanded and enhanced Kids Zone that provides a more engaging, welcoming environment for children.
• A relocated and expanded STEAM Learning Center where youth can explore science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics through hands-on learning experiences.
• A remodeled main lobby and improved facility layout that creates a safer, more accessible experience for families and visitors.
• Critical facility improvements that strengthen the YMCA's ability to serve the community for years to come.

Thanks to federal funding, YMCA investment, and early community support, significant progress has already been made toward the project goal. Now, we are inviting our community to help complete the final phase of funding through the Walnut Creek Community Campaign.
