Project Description

SILT's Land Walk Program connects landowners in the Greater Des Moines Region directly with conservation experts through on-site farm evaluations and educational visits. These guided walks help landowners understand conservation opportunities, sustainable practices, and land preservation options including conservation easements. Our staff will conduct assessments of soil health, landscape attributes, and food farming opportunities, while discussing each property's conservation potential. Landowners receive personalized recommendations for sustainable farming practices and learn about SILT's programs that can help preserve their land for future generations. Each land walk builds relationships between SILT and the urban farming community, identifying new properties for potential conservation protection. These evaluations provide landowners opportunities to improve water quality, biodiversity, erosion prevention, and soil health in the Des Moines area.
