Project Description

Iowa Produce Prescription Program connects food-insecure patients with diet-related diseases to healthcare providers to write prescriptions for free fruits and vegetables while delivering nutrition education.

  1. 82 patients and their families were prescribed fruits and vegetables in 2023, resulting in over $41,000 of fresh fruits and vegetables purchased.
  2. The Produce Prescription Program pilot phase and similar programs nationwide have been shown to improve health outcomes A1C and cholesterol in participants.

By providing healthy foods to Iowans with diet-related diseases, we advance health equity by transforming the healthcare system’s role to increase access to affordable, nutritious food to improve the overall health of patients.
