ICON On-Water Maintenance & Safety Program

Project Description

The On-Water Maintenance and Safety Program helps maintain safe, accessible, and enjoyable water trail experiences for thousands of Central Iowa residents and visitors. As recreational use of our waterways grows, proactive maintenance is essential to ensure both safety and usability.

ICON collaborates with 12 member municipalities to identify and prioritize areas in need of attention—such as stretches blocked by woody debris, downed trees, or other obstructions—and coordinates with trusted partners to complete the work efficiently and effectively.

Safety Goals & Alignment

ICON Water Trails is leading a regional effort to improve safety coordination and messaging across the network. Key efforts include:

• Continuous improvement across the network

• Maintained 40+ miles of water trails
• Completed work on 6 separate water trails
• Served 9 of 12 member jurisdictions
• Delivered services including debris removal, junk extraction, and shoreline stabilization
