Construction Of Our First Supportive Housing Structure

Ordinary Opportunities is a newly established 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to empowering adults with disabilities by providing them with the gift of an ordinary day — one filled with independence, connection, and belonging.

 

Our mission is to create fully accessible, barrier-free living spaces designed to maximize both autonomy and social connection. Each living space will be thoughtfully connected to a shared common area — encouraging community, support, and friendship while maintaining each resident’s independence.

 

While there are similar concepts located in the Des Moines area, few of these are truly accessible in a manner that boosts independence and maximizes autonomy. The need is great — currently, 70% of adults with disabilities live with their parents, often with limited opportunities to experience independent adulthood as all their peers naturally get to.

 

As an occupational therapist and a mother of a young adult with a disability, I’ve experienced firsthand how challenging this transition can be. Every parent wants their child to live a meaningful, independent life surrounded by community — and Ordinary Opportunities is working to make that dream a reality for families like ours.
