Lunch Unplugged set to entertain downtown workforce

The Downtown Community Alliance (DCA) along with the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines are pleased to announce the lineup and event details for Lunch Unplugged. This new eight-week entertainment series will be held from noon - 1 p.m. at the Temple for Performing Arts,1011 Locust Street in Downtown Des Moines, beginning March 7 and continuing weekly through April 21, 2011.

 

The lineup for Lunch Unplugged includes

 Friday, March 4

 Ry Cuming - Ry is an Australian born singer songwriter - think Jack Johnson meets Stevie Wonder. He is touring this spring with OneRepublic and Maroon 5. Genre: Pop/Rock/Acoustic

 

Thursday, March 10

 Butch Thompson - In his 40 year career, pianist Butch Thompson has earned a worldwide reputation as a traditional jazz and ragtime master. Genre: Piano, jazz/ragtime

 

 Thursday, March 17

 Valerie Vigoda - Valerie is a singer/electric violin player and has toured the world with Cyndi Lauper when they opened for Tina Turner and Cher, Joe Jackson and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.Genre:Electric violinist/singer/songwriter

 

 Friday, March 25      

 Vance Gilbert - Vance Gilbert burst onto the singer/songwriter scene in the early 90's when buzz started spreading in the folk clubs of Boston about an ex-multicultural arts teacher who was knocking 'em dead at open mics. Genre: Singer/Songwriter

 

 Wednesday, March 30        

 THE MAGIC FLUTE by Opera Iowa - The Magic Flute is a spectacular potpourri of worldly and heavenly delights all set with sublime enchantment to some of Mozart's greatest music!                                

 

Wednesday, April 6

 Sonos - Sonos turned a cappella on its head with bold interpretations of 21st century classics - reinventing artists like Radiohead and Fleet Foxes to the Jackson 5 and Britney Spears. If you like Glee, you'll love Sonos. Genre: A cappella/popular

 

 Friday, April 15                   

 Catie Curtis - The vivid songwriting of Catie Curtis combines insightful lyrics with addictive melodies and energy. Her music has been featured on popular TV shows such as Grey's Anatomy, Dawson's Creek, Alias and Chicago Hope. Genre: Singer/songwriter/folk

 

 Thursday, April 21  

 The Nadas - A local favorite, The Nadas will feature Jason Walsmith and Mike Butterworth, the duo work perfectly as a songwriting unit, skillfully evoking the romance, introspection and uncertainty of living life on one's own terms in the 21st Century. Genre: singer/songwriters/folk/rock

 

Tickets are $8 and can be bundled with a boxed lunch from South Union Bread CafĂ© for an additional $7. Advance tickets can be purchased online at www.LunchUnplugged.com, by phone at 515-246-2300 and at the Civic Center ticket office at 221 Walnut Street in Downtown Des Moines. Tickets may also be purchased at the door 30 minutes prior to the show.  Lunch from South Union must ordered online with a ticket purchase three days prior to the show. Concert attendees may also bring their own lunch to eat in the theater.

 "Lunch Unplugged adds a new layer to the work/life culture for the downtown workforce," explains Glenn Lyons, President and CEO of the Downtown Community Alliance. "We hope downtown workers will embrace this opportunity, take a break from work and make this event part of their lunchtime ritual."
