The Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines announced the winner of the Better Together Award at its annual Celebration Luncheon and Report to the Community.  The Better Together Award recognizes nonprofit organizations, civic groups, and individuals who are building social capital in our community.

Social capital is defined as connections among diverse people or groups, based on trust, that enhance cooperation for mutual benefit.  Those who build social capital possess a unique set of skills and attitudes that enable them to collaborate effectively, make connections between diverse sectors, bridge differences and nurture social networks to make a difference.

dsmHack was recognized as the Better Together Award winner and received $2,500 from the Community Foundation to advance its social capital work. dsmHack envisions a community where technology is never a barrier to doing good. Over the past five years, dsmHack has organized the annual Des Moines Charity Hack which pairs volunteer technology experts with selected nonprofits to solve technical problems in just 48 hours. Since the Charity Hack began, 422 volunteers have worked with over 50 nonprofit organizations to provide over $829,000 in in-kind technology solutions.
