May. 11, 2017 null

The Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines announced the winner of the Better Together Award at its annual Celebration Luncheon and Report to the Community.  The Better Together Award recognizes nonprofit organizations, civic groups, and individuals who are building social capital in our community.

The Refugee Alliance of Central Iowa was recognized as the Better Together Award winner, and received $2,500 from the Community Foundation to advance its social capital work.

Social capital is defined as connections among diverse people or groups, based on trust, that enhance cooperation for mutual benefit.  Those who build social capital possess a unique set of skills and attitudes that enable them to collaborate effectively, make connections between diverse sectors, bridge differences and nurture social networks to make a difference.

In addition to presenting the Better Together Award, over 640 event attendees celebrated the ways in which the Community Foundation is improving quality of life for all. The event included the Community Foundation’s version of Who Wants to be Millionaire called Who Wants to Show They Really Care, featuring local leaders as contestants, to highlight the successes of the organization. The Community Foundation’s 2017 Report to the Community was also released. An online copy of the report can be found here.
