People power is core to nonprofit success, so having a strategy around keeping -- and growing -- strong staff and volunteers is mission critical. Now, organizations are experiencing the retirement of legacy leaders and changing expectations from the next generation workforce. Yet only around 1/3 of nonprofit organizations have a leadership succession plan in place.

An organization’s succession plan goes beyond preparing for the transition of the lead staff person. Proactive planning can build the bench and aid an organization’s efforts to recruit, develop, and retain talent. High-performing organizations are adopting and adapting succession strategies that keep them on track and create room for the growth of roles and upcoming leaders.

At the conclusion of this session, participants will:

• Build awareness and knowledge of the most recent succession planning practices and tools

• Better understand how succession planning can impact their organization’s long-term health

• Broaden their view of succession planning to encompass stronger talent development strategies for their organization
