Imagine being eight years old and learning how to play a musical instrument from Kenya, dancing to Filipino folk songs, sampling Russian desserts or learning to speak Chinese. CULTUREALL, a nonprofit organization that nurtures youth to develop skills, readiness and grace in intercultural relations, uses ambassadors to provide students different cultural experiences.
Funding from Connecting Kids and Culture makes it possible for organizations like CULTUREALL to provide these experiences in classrooms.
"We celebrate who we are while honoring others through these experiences," CULTUREALL Executive Director Sherry Gupta said. "Many schools want to utilize our services but do not have the funding. Connecting Kids and Culture bridges the gap and provides the funding that makes it possible."
These cultural experiences bring the curriculum to life for students and reinforce classroom instruction.
"It brings the world to our little corner of Iowa," Chris Joslin, educator at St. Francis of Assisi School in West Des Moines, said.
