Better Money Project - Information System (BMP-IS)

BMP-IS has been developed for use by funders, strategic planners, health and human service providers and others interested in the effective allocation of resources for health and human service programs in Polk County.

Iowa Council of Foundations
The Iowa Council of Foundations was established in 1998 to lead foundations and charitable giving organizations in a unified effort to strengthen and promote philanthropy in the State of Iowa.


Iowa Nonprofit Resource Center
The Larned A. Waterman Iowa Nonprofit Resource Center is a University of Iowa interdisciplinary collaboration to make more accessible educational and service programs focused on strengthening the operational capacity of Iowa nonprofit organizations. The center works collaboratively with government agencies, nonprofit organizations and educational institutions. The center creates new knowledge through activities and provides information and training resources to help nonprofit organizations and interested persons throughout Iowa.

Project Destiny is a blueprint for the future of Des Moines' economic and community development efforts.

Results-Based Accountablility
Results Based Accountability (RBA) is a disciplined way of thinking and taking action that communities can use to improve the lives of children, families and the community as a whole. RBA can also be used by agencies to improve the performance of the programmes. RBA can be adapted to fit the unique needs and circumstances of different communities and programs.

The Impact of Charitable Nonprofit Organizations on Iowa's Economy and Quality of Life
In January 2004, Governor Vilsack appointed the Governor's Task Force on the Role of Charitable Nonprofit Organizations in Iowa to "assess the present and potential role of Iowa's Nonprofit Sector in advancing the vitality of communities throughout the state."  As a result, the Task Force presented a list of 12 recommendations to Governor Vilsack that would enhance the effectiveness and services of Iowa's charitable nonprofit organizations.  One recommendation of the Task Force was to "create and publish an annual report on the economic and programmatic impact of the charitable nonprofit sector in Iowa."
Iowa Principles and Practices for Charitable Nonprofit Excellence

The Greater Des Moines Community Foundation encourages all Iowa nonprofits to be in compliance with the Iowa Principles and Practices for Charitable Nonprofit Excellence developed by the Iowa Governor's Nonprofit Task Force. 

In addition, the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation encourages all Iowa nonprofit organizations to register as an organization in compliance with these guidelines.  The Iowa Registery of Accountability is a voluntary listing of charitable nonprofits that have committed themselves to continuous improvement through the Principles and Practices as general guidelines.  This voluntary listing was conceived as an alternative to a national accreditation system of all nonprofits which has been proposed in U.S. Senate hearings.  To view the Registry,

American Institute of Certified Public Accountants

Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance
The BBB Wise Giving Alliance Standards for Charity Accountability were developed to assist donors in making sound giving decisions and to foster public confidence in charitable organizations.  The standards seek to encourage fair and honest solicitations practices, to promote ethical conduct by charitable organizations and to advance support of philanthropy.

Better Business Bureau
BBB reports provide information on over 2.5 million organizations. It's a good idea to check before you invest or give.

T.P.I.
