Types of Funds

Affiliate Funds

Affiliate Funds are established for the support of a variety of charitable purposes and organizations within a specific community or region. A local advisory board is appointed within each affiliate community and/or county, which has grantmaking and fundraising responsibility for that area.

Agency Funds

Agency Funds maintain assets that benefit a charitable organization and distribute investment income on an annual basis, creating a stable income stream. The Community Foundation's skill in administering and investing endowment assets allows organizations to focus on fundraising rather than fund investing.

Better Together Community Funds
Visionary philanthropists with broad charitable interests are making sure their gifts last forever by leaving or making gifts to the Community Foundation's Better Together Community Fund.  These flexible dollars provide the Community Foundation’s Board of Directors with the ability to respond to emerging community needs.

Community Betterment Fund

Community Betterment Funds are designed to improve the quality of life in Greater Des Moines. The Community Foundation works in a management and/or fiscal role to assist in project coordination.

Designated Funds

Designated Funds maintain assets that benefit and help ensure the continuity of a charitable organization. Designated Funds distribute investment income to the organization on an annual basis, creating a stable income stream.

Donor Advised Funds

Donor Advised Funds are established by individuals, families, civic groups and businesses to make grants to the charities of their choice. The donor or the funds’ advisors identify the charitable causes the donor wishes to support. Grants are distributed from fund income, principal or a combination of the two. Recommendations for grants must be approved by the Community Foundation Board of Directors, as required by the Internal Revenue Service.

Field of Interest Funds

Field of Interest Funds connect people with their passions specific to areas of need in their community. Education, the arts and disadvantaged youth and families are a few of the areas donors support through these funds. Grants are made to community organizations to assist programs that are making a difference in the field of interest selected.

Nonprofit Accounting Services
The Community Foundation Nonprofit Accounting Services team provides full-service accounting and financial support to organizations that do not have the staff expertise or time to manage these functions in-house. Organizations must have a fund at the Foundation to participate in this program and fees are based on the nonprofit’s level of activity and the amount and type of support desired.

Scholarship Funds

Donors may establish Scholarship Funds to benefit students of a particular school, geographic region, educational discipline, gender or other designation. The Scholarship Advisory Panel and selection criteria must be approved by the Community Foundation Board of Directors, as required by the Internal Revenue Service.

Seed Funds

Seed Funds allow donors to build a permanent endowment over time. Once $10,000 is accumulated, the fund matures into a charitable endowment and donors can start supporting their favorite charities.
