The Chronicle of Philanthropy has compiled a special section with archived stories, live discussions and statistics to help nonprofits with topics such as fundraising, management, and careers.

The Nonprofit Finance Fund has definitions, questions nonprofits should consider, tips and more.

Nonprofit 911 is a social network created by Nonprofit Roundtable to allow individuals to "come together to redefine how nonprofits operate in this new economic reality."

The National Council on Nonprofits developed this resource which includes basic facts and analysis, reports about the impact on nonprofits, actions steps and more.

IFF
, a nonprofit community development loan fund, provides affordable, flexible and accessible financing for the facility and equipment needs of Iowa nonprofits serving low-income or special-needs populations. IFF loans range from $10,000 to $1.5 million, cover up to 95 percent of total project costs, and are typically fully amortized for a term of up to 15 years.  IFF offers financing for leasehold improvements and is able to fill a financing gap in second position with another lender.

The Iowa Council of Foundations was established in 1998 to lead foundations and charitable giving organizations in a unified effort to strengthen and promote philanthropy in the State of Iowa.


The Larned A. Waterman Iowa Nonprofit Resource Center is a University of Iowa interdisciplinary collaboration to make more accessible educational and service programs focused on strengthening the operational capacity of Iowa nonprofit organizations. The center works collaboratively with government agencies, nonprofit organizations and educational institutions. The center creates new knowledge through activities and provides information and training resources to help nonprofit organizations and interested persons throughout Iowa.

Results Based Accountability (RBA) is a disciplined way of thinking and taking action that communities can use to improve the lives of children, families and the community as a whole. RBA can also be used by agencies to improve the performance of the programmes. RBA can be adapted to fit the unique needs and circumstances of different communities and programs.

In January 2004, Governor Vilsack appointed the Governor's Task Force on the Role of Charitable Nonprofit Organizations in Iowa to "assess the present and potential role of Iowa's Nonprofit Sector in advancing the vitality of communities throughout the state."  As a result, the Task Force presented a list of 12 recommendations to Governor Vilsack that would enhance the effectiveness and services of Iowa's charitable nonprofit organizations.  One recommendation of the Task Force was to "create and publish an annual report on the economic and programmatic impact of the charitable nonprofit sector in Iowa."

The Community Foundation encourages all Iowa nonprofits to be in compliance with the Iowa Principles and Practices for Charitable Nonprofit Excellence developed by the Iowa Governor's Nonprofit Task Force. 

In addition, the Community Foundation encourages all Iowa nonprofit organizations to register as an organization in compliance with these guidelines.  The Iowa Registery of Accountability is a voluntary listing of charitable nonprofits that have committed themselves to continuous improvement through the Principles and Practices as general guidelines.  This voluntary listing was conceived as an alternative to a national accreditation system of all nonprofits which has been proposed in U.S. Senate hearings.  View the Registry.

National Resources for Nonprofits

The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants is the national, professional organization for all Certified Public Accountants.  Its mission is to provide members with the resources, information, and leadership that enable them to provide valuable services in the highest professional manner to benefit the public as well as employers and clients.  Download the AICPA Audit Committee Guide for Not-for-Profit Organizations.

The Better Business Bureau Wise giving Alliance Standards for Charity Accountability were developed to assist donors in making sound giving decisions and to foster public confidence in charitable organizations.  The standards seek to encourage fair and honest solicitations practices, to promote ethical conduct by charitable organizations and to advance support of philanthropy.

The Better Business Bureau reports provide information on over 2.5 million organizations. It's a good idea to check before you invest or give.
