Iowa Principles & Practices

On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation, we are pleased to offer nonprofit organizations the opportunity to attend the Iowa Principles and Practices for Charitable Nonprofit Excellence training, facilitated by the Iowa Nonprofit Resource Center.  The Community Foundation is committed to building the capacity of our local nonprofit sector and we believe adherence to the Principles and Practices is incresingly important in providing additional credibility to Iowa charitable organizations.

The Community Foundation and many community funders are strongly recommending that the organizations they support meet the best practices standards highlighted in this training.  The Iowa Principles and Practices for Charitable Nonprofit Excellence training and guidebook are the result of a 2004 Iowa Governor's Task Force to assess the role of the nonprofit sector and their potential for advancing the vitality of communities throughout the state.  The Principles and Practices recognize that good organizational practices are primarily implemented through education and self-regulation.  This six hour training is designed to help anyone involved in the nonprofit sector promote good management practices, ethical conduct, and public accountability.  Upon completion of the training, organizations that send one or more staff members will complete the requirements to be listed on the Larned A. Waterman Iowa Nonprofit Resource Center's Principles and Practices Accountability Register.
Join us for the Iowa Principles and Practices for Charitable Nonprofit Excellence training, Tuesday, April 29th at the Junior Achievement of Central Iowa, 6100 Grand Avenue, Des Moines.  Please return the registration as soon as possible, enrollment is limited to the first 75 participants.

Purpose

The Iowa Principles and Practices for Charitable Nonprofit Excellence recognize that good organizational practices are primarily implemented through education and self-regulation. The Principles and Practices are not regulatory. While many of the Principles and Practices will be helpful to all nonprofits, they are specifically written for 501(c)(3) organizations. The Iowa Principles and Practices for Charitable Nonprofit Excellence are intended to be primarily an educational process designed to improve efficiency and accountability.

Iowa is enriched by a great diversity of nonprofits, and it is recognized that the implementation of these Principles and Practices will take different forms and occur at different levels given the resources of the nonprofits.

Who should attend?

The training session is designed to help anyone involved in the nonprofit sector including management, staff, board members, volunteers, and professional association employees. Anyone seeking the skills needed to strengthen their nonprofit organization is welcome.
